Silvana Papasergi, Palazzo Della Civilta Italiana (ARCHITECTURE 2022)
The Palazzo Della Civilta Italiana, also known as, The Square Colosseum, was built between 1938 and 1943, designed by architects, Giovanni Guerrini, Ernesto Bruno La Padula and Mario Romano, is the symbolic centrepiece of EUR, the business district of Rome. Although this building has its foundations firmly planted in the fascist history of Italy, a time Italians would much rather forget, the Palazzo will always be a reminder the beauty and ugliness can coexist. After a recent renovation, the Palazzo is now occupied by Italian fashion house, Fendi, giving this monumental structure a chance at a new story and a promising future. Intrigued by its history and amazed by its presence, I found myself drawn to The Palazzo. I wanted my images to capture the dichotomy of its existence, the brutal past, its playful present, and its creative future.
