Kevin Palmer, Proudly on Display (Art (2019))
My Uncle Harry was a man exuberant for life. He survived a grenade exploding in his chest, rebuilt his life, and from that point on never wanted to look at anything as a misfortune. Every car he ever owned, new or second hand, he would park on a little side street to take a photo of it. Same spot, same angle, proudly on display. Once a month proud car owners do something similar. Parking their cars on a tucked away street to show them off to adoring crowds. What I see in each car is a form of art that has a life or helps to bring to life their dreams, their passions and exuberance. Occasionally I have a chance to talk to the owners about their efforts of bringing back to life each piece of metal, (or just keep it running). Sometimes there is also mention made of deep and personal events that are linked to what they have resurrected. For the most part I try to take images of these objects as still life subjects, on location, their surrounds defining their purpose. Each image has required various degrees of image editing or techniques to remove distractions. And although self-taught my intention with editing is only ever to enhance the feeling associated with the subject. Applying subtle or artistic license, only to create a little extra interest or pop where I think it helps. My aim is to create images that I think will hang nicely on an enthusiast’s wall. For the owners I’d like to think each image may bring a smile as they just look at photo of their pride and joy parked on a street.
