Aaron Hawkins, Stormy Mirror (Landscape 2020)
I found myself in the vicinity of the famous "Sky Mirror" Lake Tyrrell. Decided to have a look and hope for some mirrored sunset pics. As i arrived at the lake the dust storm of the year followed me in, it was unexplainable, a wall of red dirt back lit by the sunset and i captured a few images of the wall closing before it passed over me. It was a mayhem mix of raining mud, tumbleweeds, gale force winds and well no mirror. Running around snapping with my speedlight to capture the raindrops and dust like a kid in a candy shop until gear and me was drenched.. The images also showed up some kind of bio luminescence which i was later told is legit.. Wow!! I retreated to the local for a feed and as it cleared and went eerie still I was recommended NOT to attempt some astro alone but tempted with the location of an old grader 3km in. Off i went and i literally walked 3km into a mirror alone, with a nearly flat phone aiming for a distant light that should lead me past the grader. I got scared, and lost, rang a local for help to which they replied "Youre mad, you're laughing" I was this close to giving up when there she was! I got some amazing astro shots of the perfectly pink, flat lake as the storm clouds again closed in. Thought the one of me although not pure landscape sums up the portfolio perfectly! I lost the car but eventually got to the motel with salt encrusted work pants, a huge grin on my face and a camera full of once in a lifetime images!
