Shahid Tawhid, The Boats of Buriganga River, Dhaka - Bangladesh (TRAVEL 2025)

Every day, as the sun rises over Dhaka, the Buriganga River transforms into a lifeline for thousands of commuters. Small wooden boats, steered by skilled yet vulnerable ferrymen, weave through the dense and treacherous waters, carrying passengers between the city’s bustling shores. This chaotic yet essential mode of transport is a testament to resilience in a city where traffic congestion leaves few alternatives. However, the journey is fraught with danger—collisions with larger vessels, unpredictable currents, and pollution make the Buriganga one of the most perilous waterways in the world. Despite the risks, for many, these boats remain an indispensable part of daily life, navigating not just the river, but the very chaos of Dhaka itself.
