Will Lawler, The Deceptive Beauty of Deception Island (LANDSCAPE 2023)

Deception Island is close to the Antarctic Peninsula and is in fact the caldera of an active volcano. Its dark volcanic gravel and black sands bring a feeling of foreboding that harks its dark history as a seal and whaling base for over 100 years. On this day, fresh snow brought beauty to the island, softening the harshness of the environment and the cold hard edges of blubber tanks.
