Ashley Chau, The In Between (PORTRAIT 2023)
The In Between is a collection of portraits that explore my cultural identity as a second generation Chinese born Australian. The photographs were initially conceptualised from my own mixed feelings of my cultural identity as a second-generation Chinese-Australian. Throughout this project’s creative process, I’ve come to accept that being ‘in-between’ is where I belong. It is a place where I can blend both cultural aspects together in the most cohesive and harmonious way and create a ‘third culture’. I captured portraits of my family (myself, cousins and siblings) in studio, printed two separate images onto transparent vellum paper, shredded then woven them back together to create a new image. This new image represents my feelings towards my cultural identity – two things that would not normally fit together but somehow works to create a new 'third culture' identity.
