Naomi Strong, The Natural Phenomenon of the Giant Cuttlefish Aggregation (Animal 2020)
In winter each year up to 120,000 cuttlefish migrate to the shores of Whyalla in South Australia. They aggregate in this area to mate and to specifically lay their eggs on the rocky ocean floor that occurs in this area. This natural phenomenon is an incredible sight to behold. In only 2 - 6 meters of water, cuttlefish are everywhere! The big males constantly compete with each other to win the affection of a female - sometimes passively where they engage in a "Mexican standoff" and sometimes its outright combat! We are incredibly privileged that this event occurs on our shores.
