Anna Sinclair, The Neighbours (Student)

This work is part of an ongoing study of one street in Surry Hills, NSW. I was struck by the variety of income brackets of the people that lived here and saw it as representative of the growing class disparity in broader Australian society. Homes worth millions overlook houses funded by the government. Young adults are able to buy in the area if their parents can assist them, while others can only rent rooms in share houses. The stress and anxiety of "making it work" for some residents is contrasted with an ease and comfort that the wealth of others guarantees. With this series, I am uncovering the marks this disparity leaves on its subjects: their lived environments, faces and physicality, and to provide a reminder of the different economies operating within contemporary Australia. This work was presented as part of my final folio for an Advanced Diploma of Photoimaging at Sydney TAFE in May 2015.
