Byron Coll, The Silent South (Landscape (2019))
My aim with this collection of images has been to illuminate a fresh perspective on particular parts of New Zealand that have been widely photographed. Many part of this country have been overly shot from the same perspectives. By capturing very specific areas of The Remarkables, Aoraki and Castle Hill this collection of images challenges the viewer to look a bit closer before recognising these famous landmarks, and in turn offers up a 'behind the scene' take on these places we have become so familiar with. The southern region of Canterbury, New Zealand holds such majesty and power in the face of the ever-changing harshness of the weather it lives in. It exists in a completely different time signature to us and by capturing this region in a unique way, it also invites us to reflect on the freedom of our own insignificance.
