Celia Furt, The Slow Death Of The Pelican (ANIMAL 2021)
Hello fellow humans, my name is Star and as you can see in the 1st photo, I’m spreading my very big wings, I’m wearing my white feathered costume, with my pink beak and my webbed feet, to tell you a sad story that happened to us during the 2nd lockdown in Hastings, Victoria. The renovations that started on the boat ramp close to the Yacht Club were stopped. So, there were no boats, no fishermen, no fish, no food for us. Because we’re a bit lazy, we got into the habit of being fed, so we followed the seagulls to the pier parking, which we invaded. We discovered trash human food. Every day we would be there waiting. On ‘Fast-Food Rush’ we are running towards whatever leftovers humans want to give us that we fell for. As you can see in ‘The Slow Death Of The Pelican’ we were mostly fed junk food that is poisonous and deadly to us, for the duration of the lockdown. Humans think that it is ok to feed us and other birds bread, pizzas, fried food, and whatever else. But we cannot digest it! It stays in our throats and crops and we die a really painful death. So, I’m speaking for us, pelicans but also for any other bird, please do not feed us your food trash!
