Annette Ruzicka, The Sound of Cicadas (Doco/Photojournalism (2019))

It's the third time mum's been admitted to hospital with an episode of her bipolar. I am her primary carer and this time is clouded in sadness, stress and exhaustion. This is a series about the daily life as her carer while she is in hospital; the day to day, the small details and the struggles. During these times my senses are heightened and everything starts to remind me of mum. On the first night of her admission, I noticed the cicadas start to chirp for the first time this summer. A memory resurfaces of mum on our old veranda having a beer in the summer. I just hope 'that' mum will return soon.
