Hedda Murray, The Tank (ARCHITECTURE 2025)
The Tank, AGNSW, Gadigal land, Sydney Built in 1942, this underground tank at Woolloomooloo held over 6 million litres of oil as emergency supply for allied naval ships during WWII. Drained, sealed, and left in darkness since the late '70s or early '80s, it seemed lost to time – its existence becoming a tale of rumour and whispered myth. Rediscovered in 2013. Reworked by Sejima and Nishizawa and Associates architects, Tokyo (SANAA). One column was removed to insert a spiral stair in steel whose white finish contrasts with the dark space. I have tried to capture some of this enigmatic, other-worldly space and the beauty of the spiral. Canon EO-S90D hand-held
