Nada Stokic, Warped Space (Art)

The conceptual idea for the project is distortion of reality as the title suggests the warping of space and time, commenting on an aesthetics views that we usually find pleasing, for example, what do we perceive as beautiful can be distorted or warped and made ugly and unpleasing and how that can be perceived and misused in social context. The basis of the project is scanography and slit-scan photography. Scanography is a simple way of capturing an image in an extremely high detail with a very shallow depth of field. Combining them with the effect of slit scan or the distortion, the images become surreal. The distortion and dreamy like effect added with scanning, alter the basic look of the images. As the images looked crisp and elegant, the combination transforms something beautiful into less beautiful, as our perception of beauty is somewhat already designed by the media influences, images like these don’t necessary fall into the genre of beauty. Generally flowers, which are the main subject in this project, have a perception of attraction and elegance, conceptually I wanted to show the fragility, by capturing them in a decaying stage. As naturally we dispose of the flowers when they reach that state, I wanted to bring them to life, to show the elegance they still poses after we stop perceiving them as beauty. The final outcome for the warped space project is reminiscence of postmodern to pop art style, through Glitch effect the context of work developed so far falls into that genre, the aesthetics of pop art, as in reappropriation, bright colours, repetitions, cartoon strips and reproduction are all the effect that glitch art produces. The aesthetic of glitch as in broken is beautiful, awakens the nostalgia as the technology becomes more perfect, going back in time and adding that effect on new hi digital quality images, the look adds a specific context to the project, the unpredictability.
