Darnia Hobson, Whakaraupo (series) (ART 2023)
These double exposed images in negative are from the set Whakaraupo and form the beginnings of a series intended for exhibition in a circular space, replicating the harbour basin they depict. Whakaraupo is the caldera of a long extinct volcano, a place ever moving and changing through earthquake, wildfire and erosion. In this group of invented landscapes there are traces of human life, the odd aerial, or house, and the mist Maori believed the Turehu (or fairy people) hid in along the ridgelines. I am endeavouring to create subtle, quiet contemporary landscapes which gesture to stories and scars, and the importance of place. Any sense of acquaintance is an illusion, for these places as they appear do not exist.
