Based in Wellington, New Zealand, Rebecca is a NZIPP-accredited photographer who specialises in portraits, events, and unit stills. She has been shooting on Sony since starting photography and has recently been appointed as a Sony Digital Imaging Advocate. Her passion for photography dates back to her teenage years, when she developed film in a makeshift darkroom set up in the family laundry.

Photography is actually a second career pivot, following a background in communications within the film industry. It was her work as a publicist that reignited a passion for photography, leading her to explore the field more deeply. Capturing unit stills, which involves taking promotional and behind-the-scenes images on movie or TV sets, is her dream job. Creating cinematic portraits, especially for awards, is where she feels most inspired.

As a parent of two young boys, she appreciates the flexibility freelance professional photography offers, allowing her to balance work and family commitments in a way that suits their whanau (family).

You can see more of her work on her website here.

The Royal Family
This cinematic family portrait was a dream commission for a woman who was celebrating her 50th in special ways. A fun family portrait was one of the 50 ways she chose to celebrate and I’m happy I could to be the photographer that helped make that possible. This image won a Gold at the NZIPP Iris Awards (family category), and came second in the Capture Magazine portrait category last year.

Bret with his piano in the ocean
This image was used on posters promoting Bret McKenzie’s debut solo album. It from a series we shot on the South Coast in Wellington for his album ‘Songs without Jokes’. We actually did put a couple of pianos in the ocean, and one didn’t survive.

Ngahuia on the set of The Untold Tales of Tuteremoana
This quietly beautiful scene was actually a behind-the-scenes image I captured on the set of a TV series shot in the Wairarapa, New Zealand. In amongst the hustle and bustle of film crew moving gear in the bush I saw Ngahuia taking a moment for quiet reflection. Just gorgeous.

Bow Tie Otto
Otto is only 16 and recently signed with a modelling agency. This image was one of several we shot in an afternoon for his first professional photo shoot. He has such a unique look and I love how quirky everything is about this image.

Singapore at night
I was living in Singapore during 2020, the year the pandemic kicked off and locked down the world. We were unable to return to NZ and for the first time in my life I felt so disconnected from my home country. Singapore was a brilliant place to be during that time. We all experienced those universal feelings of being confined, missing family and friends, and longing for things we once did. As lockdown eased I would get out on my own for photo walks - wearing a mask in the tropics, carrying photo gear is a vivid memory. But this image reminds me of the joy and sense of freedom photography gave me to see and capture the world I was in.
