About the image
A self-portrait taken two weeks following a total thyroidectomy. The surgical tape had just been removed and I had realised that I had been unwell for decades. Like many women, the endocrine/hormonal symptoms I experienced were overlooked and therefore I developed a retrosternal multinodular goitre, compromising my airways. This image captures my confrontation with the scar and the complexity of emotions attached to it.

Australasia's Top Emerging Photographers, presented by Fujifilm, is the region's main platform for discovering and showcasing photographers at the outset of their careers, as well as aspiring photographers. The competition is open to emerging, student, and amateur photographers. The prize pool currently stands at over $24,000, including $9,000 in cash.The best entries will be showcased in the May–July 2023 issue of Capture magazine.
