Our judges – Australasia's Top Emerging Photographers 2020 – Craig Easton
Renowned landscape and people photographer, Craig Easton has recently come on board to help judge the region's preeminent competition for aspiring, emerging, and early-career photographers, Australasia's Top Emerging Photographers, now in its 12th year.
Craig Easton’s work is deeply rooted in the documentary tradition and he is recognised for his ability to combine wide, expansive landscape with intimate portraits. He began his career as a photojournalist with The Independent newspaper in London and was a contributor to Liberation in France, Der Spiegel in Germany, Time Magazine, and many others before moving on to longer term personal projects, magazine work, and books.
Much of Easton's personal work centres on issues of identity and a sense of place. He is passionate about giving a voice to his subjects and often works collaboratively with them, allowing the sitter to write their own testimony to be presented alongside the image.
The large-scale group project SIXTEEN, conceived and led by Easton, brought together sixteen leading contemporary photographers to make portraits and record testimonies of sixteen-year-olds from all walks of life, asking them about their dreams, ambitions, and fears. Exhibitions were held in 20 venues throughout 2019 with audience figures in excess of 250,000, and culminating in a major outdoor exhibition in Central London.
Fisherwomen, a long-term exploration of the contemporary and traditional importance of women in the fishing industry is currently touring the UK to wide acclaim. A portfolio publication will be published in Spring 2020.
His prints are widely collected by private individuals and corporations and held in important museum collections and archives.
In addition to his personal documentary and art projects, he continues to shoot for editorial & advertising clients worldwide. Advertising and commercial clients include: Visit Britain, Land Rover, Heathrow Airport, Wagamama, Mazda, and John Lewis, amongst ohers.
