After initiating himself into the world of photography, he began to notice his surroundings and the creative potential for what he saw. Self-taught, he became a full-time photographer in 2012 after originally working in IT for six years. His current focus is wedding photography, but says spends more time doing personal work and travelling.
He describes his work as a mix of street and documentary. “The photos are fluid and reactionary in nature. I’m more interested in the personal stories within these subcultures and events, so where possible, the photos are people-centric and environmental. I’ll spend a good bit of time getting to know people and an understanding of the subject.”
Caringal was the winner of the Live category of Canon’s Photo 5 competition in 2013 and his work received a Highly Commended in the 2013 Moran Contemporary Photography Prize. A finalist in Capture’s Australia’s Top Emerging Photographers competition in 2012 and 2013, he was also a 2012 Head On Portrait Semi-Finalist. For a personal project he is developing, he plans visit Malaysia, Philippines, Korea and Japan to document traditional free-divers in the the water and at home.
