Before these Olympic Games kicked off, I wondered who the next big star would be to break through and put their name on the proverbial map. On Monday, Japan’s 13-year old skateboarder Momiji Nishiya became one of the youngest gold medalists in Olympics history as she shocked the world and won the inaugural Women’s Street Final. In this photo, Getty Images Staff Photographer Patrick Smith perfectly captures the Nishiya’s joy when she realizes she’s secured the gold.

Getty Images Staff Photographer Al Bello expertly uses an underwater robotic camera to capture this frame during the semifinal one of the Women's 200m Individual Medley on day four of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Bello’s timing to create this image is impeccable as he snaps the robotic camera just as the swimmers are pushing off the wall and are fully extended in the water.

Patrick Smith/Getty Images, Fencing - Olympics Day: 6. “In this photo, Getty Images Staff Photographer Patrick Smith used a slow shutter speed to capture the movement and action of a fencers Luigi Samele of Team Italy and Aron Szilagyi of Team Hungary competing on day five of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. His framing of the Olympics rings in the background gives the photo a sense of time and place. Technically this type of photo is very difficult to make as you need to have something in the frame that is in focus, which at a slow shutter speed, is very hard to achieve.
