Lumen Printing with Yvette Hamilton

Join artist and photographer Yvette Hamilton for a cameraless photography workshop at Sydney Observatory.

This workshop will guide participants to create lumen prints, inspired by the history and atmospheric conditions of the site.

Dating back to the 1830s, lumen printmaking harnesses light from the sun to make images.

Yvette Hamilton is an Australian interdisciplinary artist and educator of Mauritian descent, working on Dharug and Gundungurra land in the Blue Mountains, NSW. A Senior Lecturer in Contemporary Art at Sydney College of the Arts, her expanded photographic practice blends analogue, hand-crafted techniques with digital technologies and installations, often without the use of a camera.

Hamilton’s work explores the boundaries of photographic representation, examining themes of distance, the unseen, and the intangible. Her recent work focuses on the metaphor of a black hole to bridge photography and astronomy, aiming to capture the invisible forces and phenomena that shape our understanding of reality. As an artist-in-residence at Linden Observatory, she continues to develop these themes.
