Photography for Instagram with Peter Collie

Express your photographic voice and use proven techniques with your smartphone and selected apps. Instagram is an image-driven platform and part of its power and appeal is its simplicity. There are three main parts, the image, the text and the strategy.

This is a hands-on masterclass with an experienced commercial photographer and trainer that will cover the three key areas of an effective post. You will be using your smartphone to compose strong images with a special emphasis on lighting and an assortment of selected apps that allow perfect control of the final image. You will be shown proven lighting techniques and explore what makes a strong composition. Our subjects will range from people to still life and will be adjusted to suit the mix of the class.

From here we will discuss writing styles that work with social media posts to engage interest or for a call to action.

Throughout the session, we will discuss your strategy and how it will affect the style of image and writing you create. Although Instagram is a very visual medium, there are ways you can engage people with your words. The strategy isn’t just how often and when you post, but starts with what you hope to achieve.

Even if you are not into social media, the smartphone camera is the camera that is always with you, so this is an opportunity to learn how to get the most from it.

What you get:

  • practice with lighting techniques
  • recognising good light, how to find it, how to make it
  • discussion and exploration of composition
  • introduction to using powerful editing apps on your phone that can adjust specific areas and layer objects, images and type, all within your smartphone
  • introduction to add on lenses that extend the range of your phone camera
  • ideas for creating a conversation with your followers using words and images

What you need to bring:

  • your smartphone, charged and with space to take pictures
  • if there is something in particular you want to master photographing, bring that
